Family/Parental Consulting

  • Initial Meeting to explain the college admissions process and answer questions, including selective admissions rubrics and the differences between highly-selective and state/local college admissions methodologies
  • Advice regarding high school selection, course choices, summer activities, and the right college “fit” for each student
  • Strategies for maximizing the value of on-campus college visits
  • Recommendation and referral to proven SAT/ACT test tutors, based upon needs and student personality
  • Recommendation and referral to professionals for additional, formalized interest and ability analyses, to give college and career direction to those who are “undecided”
  • Progress meetings during admissions season
  • Unlimited access via telephone, e-mail and Skype

  • One-on-one discussions with students, in office or via Skype
  • True Socratic inquiry into each student’s unique attributes

Essay Preparation

  • SCC’s “CODE”: Concept, Organization, Drafting and Editing
  • Identification of concepts for “main” and supplemental essays required by individual colleges, matching each student’s strengths to admissions score sheets
  • Multiple drafts of main-essay outlines, including development of memorable details using the “question word” methodology
  • Speedy and courageous drafting, with most students successfully completing their first drafts within SCC’s “22-Minute Challenge”
  • Professional, interactive and prompt editing, focusing on the thesis, concise language, grammar, and writing style

Application Review

  • Hands-on review of admissions applications, usually within the application portal itself
  • Organization of each student’s List of Activities, including placing activities in proper order to ensure a compelling presentation that is consistent with the student’s “pitch”
  • Editing of “Details” within the List of Activities, to match activity descriptions to the “language” of selective-college evaluation criteria
  • Strategy regarding optional essays, “additional information” and attachments

High School Recommendations

  • Guidance for parents and students in filling out information forms requested by high school counselors, focusing on “value added” information directed towards scoring rubrics
  • Advice regarding the selection of teachers for recommendations
  • E-mail and telephone communication (where appropriate) with each student’s college/career counselor, providing information about each student to assist the writing of recommendations
  • Assistance in connecting student-athletes to college coaches and admission liaisons

Interview Preparation

  • Detailed explanation of interview logistics and strategy, including what interviewers seek, how interviewers write interview reports, how admissions representatives read the reports, interview topics and questions, and all the “do’s and don’ts” of college interviewing
  • Internal documents and sample interview reports from highly-selective colleges
  • Intensive Q and A practice, focusing on controlling content and conversation flow, length of answers, body language and non-verbal communication, strong endings and effective follow-up
  • Mock/Practice interviews, with Ivy League and professional interviewers
